King Coal Show, Carmichaels PA
Article Written by Dave Plavi
This year (2017) marks the 64th Annual Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal Show, which has taken place in Carmichaels since 1954. At the time of its inception, the area was going through tough times, due to the, then, modernization of the coal industry.
Hundreds of local coal miners were losing their job and local leaders sought a way to bring light to the coal industry, while working on the advancement and development. The idea of a festival wa ‘borrowed, from other areas and their industry, branding the area King Coal.
For years, the festival grew and grew, celebrating the industry that thrived in the area. Families would make their way to the fire hall for exhibits, food and fun.
The Coal Show has evolved, over the years, and certainly hasn’t lost its original purpose in the celebration of coal. As the coal industry has taken a decline, in recent years, it still celebrates what has made our community thrive and innovate, in the past.
The carnival, that takes place on the grounds of the firehall, marks the unofficial end of the summer, for returning high school students. Being able to catch up with friends, hadn’t seen in months, enjoying the last few days of freedom, with that summer crush and for those select few, be center stage in the parade. The memories made, that week, last a lifetime.
For those who are taking their kids, they’re able to share the same experiences they had, as a child, while reminiscing with friends. Bringing friends together, with their families and watching their kids, all making memories of their own.
The Coal Show has its purpose, at its core. But what makes the event a success, are those who attend, laugh, smile and make those memories. That is the community, our community. That is what coal has given us.
