Love Where I'm Living – Living Where I Love
The First September That Counts
By Caitlin Carlisle
This is the year I fell in love with Greene County.
Greene County wasn't "home" to me. A few months before we were married, my husband Ken and I stumbled across an old house, during a dry September. The stately trees, carriage houses and picket fences were made for golden afternoons and instantly we threw down roots and drop cloths and started our lives in Rogersville.
In the spirit of full-disclosure, I “married into” Rogersville. My in-laws were local business people and Ken graduated from West Greene before moving away. I was welcomed into this community wholeheartedly and slack was cut at my out-of-town aloofness. It’s hard not to fall under the spell of church dinners, town yard sales, square dances and talking shop every evening over coffee at the general store. The authenticity had us charmed and we were hooked. We joined with our neighbors in sharing a desire to preserve our sweet corner of Greene County.
Various career moves led us on a few cross-country relocations, toting a small child and a smaller dog to rental homes and apartments. The Rogersville house was never far from my thoughts – our September house. Knowing the house sat waiting for us in our adopted hometown gave us the confidence the strike out and explore a little bit more. However, this small place and large house keep pulling me back.
One day, on our tree lined street where we mow each other's lawns and children run from yard to yard, I knew this was our forever home. As soon as the first school bus crept to the bus stop and the neighbors on the corner open their porch for rainy morning waits, I felt this town creep into my heart. Little scraped-knee boys running to grandma’s house; an evening walk with neighborhood moms; first days of school - I've fallen in love with this September house and its sleepy town. Here’s hoping that my little boys carry the same golden Rogersville afternoons into the rest of their lives.
